On this year’s International Day of the Disappeared, 30 August 2018, we again call the world’s attention to the thousands of Syrians lost in the darkness of the Syrian regime’s detention system. Our thoughts remain with them and their loved ones. Recently, thousands of families have been shocked by the death notices of the Syrian regime which have changed the status of their loved ones in the civil registries to deceased. No information has been given as to the whereabouts or circumstances of their deaths, no information as to the responsibility for and true cause of their deaths, no location of burial sites and no return of their remains to the families.
Lawyers and Doctors for Human Rights (LDHR) has the honor to share with you its legal analysis of these death notices and how they can be used against the regime as evidence of its continuing Crimes against Humanity (murder, extermination, torture, sexual violence, enforced disappearance and other inhumane acts). LDHR urge all states and actors to take all necessary steps to Save The Rest, to bring accountability in all its forms for these grave international crimes, and to uphold the Right to Truth of the Syrian families of the disappeared.
