- The timeframe for this consultancy is estimated to be 3 weeks(15 days), each week 5 days/40 hours, with a total of 120 hours.
- And will be distributed as follows: The first week will take a place on the 21st of October 2022, and the 2nd and the 3rd weeks will be during the period from November 2022 till February 2023.
- Background/purpose:
LDHR is a grass-roots NGO dedicated to civilians in crisis with the intent to stop human rights violations and assist those who require services to seek justice and rehabilitation.
We originally started as a group of lawyers and physicians devoting efforts to document the atrocities taking place in crises with an emphasis on ex-detainees and torture survivors. Through targeted training and mentoring by international experts, we were able to deepen and diversify our expertise in medical-legal documentation of torture and SGBV. Multiple phases of this project produced committees, attracted new members, and we have developed a more organized way of collaborating to obtain justice and fulfil the mission of preserving human rights for all.
LDHR is growing fast and expanding its activities while building and sharing knowledge and expertise.
As part of its projects, LDHR wants to deliver Istanbul protocol training. This training aims to train a group of doctors to do the medical documentation of human rights violations (torture and sexual violence) and produce forensic medical evaluation reports to build cases with the purpose to increase access to justice and accountability.
These Terms of Reference (ToR) are for an Individual trainer or Consultant who will be engaged to provide the technical assistance for the project.
- Work Assignments/ Timeframe
The timeframe for this consultancy is estimated to be 3 weeks of training, each week 5 days (40 hours) which means 120 hours in total.
The first week will take a place on the 21st of October 2022, and the 2nd and the 3rd weeks will be during the period from November 2022 till February 2023.
- Methodology:
Interactive training takes into consideration the adult learning methods: group discussion, brainstorming, case studies, and playing roles.
- The first week will be informative to introduce the basic principles
- The second week will focus on skills
- The third week will focus on the attitude
- The Objective of The Training:
- By the end of the training, the trainee should be able to do a full forensic medical evaluation according to Istanbul protocol.
- To understand Istanbul protocol principles
- To understand the importance of documentation
- To understand some basic definitions: torture, sexual violence, human rights violation…
- To understand the principles of physical and psychological exam
- To describe the torture findings
- To understand the sexual violence methods and findings on males and females
- To understand the self-care principles.
- To have the needed skills to interview the survivors of torture and SV
- To understand the role of expert witness
- To understand the different types of courts
- To understand the referral pathways
- To have the skills in the forensic photography
- Qualifications and Specialized Knowledge/Experience Required:
- Hold medical degree (doctor) or lawyers, psychiatrist, psychologist.
- Certified trainer in Istanbul protocol.
- At least two years of experience in documentation of human rights violations according to Istanbul protocol.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility to work under pressure and in response to changing needs.
- Very good computer knowledge: MS Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word programs.
- Fluent in Arabic essential.
- Previous experience working in the MENA region and understanding the Syrian crisis context is an advantage.
- Estimated Duration of Contract (Dates and period):
The assignment shall spread over the period as per mentioned above as three weeks with 15 training days which means 120 training hours in total with the intended commencement date of this contract being October 1st, 2022 till February 28th 2023 (negotiable).

- All documents, findings and data collected by the consultant will be treated as confidential and used solely to facilitate analysis and not be used (fully or partially) in any other context
- The respondents/ participants from LDHR will not be quoted in the reports without their permission.
